After Halo: Combat Evolved’s triumph, a sequel was expected and eagerly anticipated. Bungie drew inspiration from narrative and gameplay elements omitted from their first game, such as online multiplayer.

A troubled development and time constraints necessitated scope reductions, including eliminating an ambitious multiplayer mode and a cliffhanger conclusion for the game’s campaign mode.
